What we talk about when we talk about dignity . . .
Our planet is bursting at the seams. Many feel isolated and marginalized, fearing there is little hope for a better future. The global pandemic clearly demonstrates our interdependence. But as our irrational consumption of natural resources pits humanity against itself, we often erect physical and psychological walls that prevent respectful discourse and empathy for others.
In The Dignity Doctrine: Rational Relations in an Irrational World, Mark Coleman shares his vision for a more peaceful, just, and sustainable future—a welcome alternative to the prevailing nightmare scenario of dwindling resources and escalating misery. In spite of our mistakes and vulnerabilities, Coleman believes humanity has a lot going in its favor, including the merits of our collective diversity, wisdom, intellect, and creativity. The sheer numbers of people on Earth can be an advantage—not a condemnation to end mankind.
If we view humanity as a “human resource” inexorably linked to the earth’s ecosystems, we will be equipped to work together to get on with the business of securing our destiny. Bottom line: there is no sustainability without better human relationships, and this begins with acknowledging the fundamental dignity of each person and all other living things on our planet.
The Dignity Doctrine is a welcome guide to inspire positive change in the relationships in our daily lives, as well as our goals to advance sustainable enterprise.
